Non operating expenses
Definition for Non operating expenses
Non-operating Expenses
Costs that arise from activities unrelated to a company’s core business operations, typically reported separately from operating expenses on the income statement.
For instance, a manufacturing company might incur non-operating expenses such as $200,000 in interest on bonds payable, $50,000 in foreign currency exchange losses, and $150,000 in losses from selling obsolete equipment, none of which relate to its primary manufacturing activities.
Non-operating expenses include interest expense, losses on asset disposals, restructuring costs, and expenses from discontinued operations. Separating these items from operating expenses provides clearer insight into core business performance. While non-operating expenses reduce bottom-line profit, they don’t necessarily reflect problems with the company’s primary business model or operational effectiveness.
